oxford english dictionary
I am editing a feature story about Tasmania's mysterious, mythical and magical Tarkine wilderness. It's great material (Sample 1: "We had enjoyed a picnic on land that had been continually occupied for 15 millennia before the founding of Rome." Sample 2: "Breathing the world’s cleanest air, we reflected that the next land due west was Patagonia.")

Then the writer (Warren Boyles) talks for a while about flora, including the rainforest "understorey". I am not familiar with this word and, as any competent, dedicated editor would do, I growl and reach for ... Google.
