Tips for new bloggers
September 6th 2008 09:27
People blog for many reasons. My main reason is to make me write - blogging provides both a forum and a motivation. If you are looking for an interest, then forget the rules and do what is fun for you. If on the other hand you are looking to make decent money, or just decent content, then these simple starter tips may help.
1. Do not buy any product that promises to show you how to make a lot of money through blogging. It is all available for free on the Internet.
2. Do not believe any claim that blogging can make you a lot of money quickly. It is possible to make a lot of money but, like every kid who aims to play professional sport, it takes talent and a lot of hard work. Many try; few get there.
3. Do not believe any claim that you can achieve anything at all quickly. It is the reality of the way search engines work. If you generate good, original material on a consistent basis for nine months to a year, then the Google gods will start noticing you in a meaningful way.
4. Do not start without doing some research about blogging. Read all about it. If you just jump in and start writing about your favourite film, your latest political vent or about your summer holiday with Aunt Maude, you will, at best, make some friends amongst like-minded people. Facebook does it better.
5. Do not forget to wear your thick skin. It's a real community out there, and you will meet all sorts. The anonymity of the Internet protects bullies and fools.
